SLEEPOVER LA TO PREMIERE AT SXSW FILM FESTIVAL, MARCH 7-14, 2014
SLEEPOVER LA: SHORT FILM SET AT THE STANDARD, DOWNTOWN LA IS SLATED FOR ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT SXSW FESTIVAL
Sleepover LA, a short film directed by Lily Baldwin and produced by Nicole Disson, set at The Standard hotel in downtown Los Angeles, will have its world premiere at the 26th annual South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival this spring. One of 27 films selected for the festival's short narrative program, out of thousands of applications, Sleepover LA features a bold score, stylized dance and an eccentric cast that revamp traditional narrative telling the story of an innocent tourist that travels to LA and unexpectedly conjures her sister's last night alive.
When Taylor travels to LA to put her sister's ashes to rest, time begins to blur and the past and present collide.
A series of unexpected events take place overnight at The Standard hotel, and she relives her sister Jessica's last night alive, opening her eyes to an entire world she never knew existed. This is the first collaboration between director Lily Baldwin and producer Nicole Disson, both co-stars in the film.
Sleepover LA poses this question: How much can change in one night?
SleepoverLA, which will be making its private market premiere at the EFM Berlinale 2014 this weekend, is the first collaboration between Baldwin and Disson who began working together on the film in April 2012. Written by Baldwin and Andrea Claire-Maio, the film features Baldwin and Disson as its two leads, alongside a strong collective of LA personalities, artists, actors, dancers and even world champion figure skater, curated by Disson.
Additionally, the film’s production team boasts strong group of women at the creative helm, including production designer Sonja Kroop, costume designer Katie Casey and additional editing by Alex Lee Moyer.
The film features an original score by composer Mark degli Antoni (Werner Herzog “Into the Abyss”, Soul Coughing), with a new track by electronic pop and dance band, ROOM 8, and was mixed at the Skywalker Ranch Studios this past fall by Kent Sparling.
Sleepover LA aligned with The Mill in NYC for re-coloring and was filmed in December 2012 on the Arri Alexa by cinematographer Austin Rhodes.
In keeping with Baldwin’s recent film, Sea Meadow (Best of at SXSW 2012, Art Basel Miami 2013) the director recontextualizes contemporary dance as a method of storytelling, using the physicality of movement and a bold mash-up score to propel the noire narrative, while creating a distinct storytelling vernacular. Also a dancer and choreographer, Baldwin has performed with David Byrne on the world tour for his album with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today and the accompanying feature film Ride, Rise, Roar.
Disson, who comes from a strong theater background, is recognized for her crossover work as a producer and performer and ability to cultivate talent, while fusing this energy into unique settings and situations. Disson initiated the film after producing THE SERIES, a multi-disciplinary production incorporating dance, film, art, and music at The Standard, Downtown LA from 2010 – 2012 and previously signed the hotel as the official corporate sponsor for NEW., an experimental rock opera held at The Million Dollar Theater in 2010.
The world premiere of Sleepover LA will take place between March 7-14th at SXSW Film Festival. Exact screening times and locations will be announced February 12th and can be found on the festival's website http://sxsw.com.
